The question was, what would she do now as First Lady of the United States (or FLOTUS)? She wanted to play a part in government. So Hillary read about all the First Ladies before her. She admired Eleanor Roosevelt the most. Eleanor was involved with many causes. She wrote a newspaper column and spoke out for human rights. Hillary decided to be like that, too.

Bill wanted Hillary to work on changing health care so that poor people in the United States could count on seeing good doctors without paying a lot of money. Other countries, such as Great Britain, did this. So why not the United States?

Helping to change medical care was exactly the kind of work that meant most to Hillary. She took an office in the West Wing of the White House. (That’s where the president and his aides work. Before this, First Ladies always stayed in offices in the East Wing.)
