Alesha lay on the double bed in her old bedroom, her fingers tracing patterns on the bed cover. She stared at the ceiling. There were little glow-in-the-dark stars stuck above her head; theyâd been there for years, slowly discolouring, their glow dimmed. This used to be her room up until sheâd moved out of home. Sheâd lived in the bungalow at the back of her parentâs place and by a twist of fate, she was back here again, lying under those same stars. Her life had imploded with one text. She should have been watching Kelsey as she had offered to do; it had been the perfect chance to mend things with her sister. She should have ignored the bloody ping of her phone and waited but she had been so happy that the man she was seeing had messaged her that she had checked it. James had ignored her the whole car ride over, making no effort to engage her in any conversation whatsoever. Around other people, he came across as attentive and loving, but when they were alone, it was a different story. He had obviously fallen out of love with her a long time ago but was too much of a coward to pull the pin on their relationship. Then Kelsey had died and sheâd fallen apart at the seams.
Instead of supporting his wife when she needed him most, instead of standing by her side, he was highly embarrassed by her suicide attempt. It was all over town what sheâd done, their friends knew, their work colleagues knew, and his way of coping with that was to ask her to move out of their house. It had been humiliating and hurtful. He hadnât even come to visit her in the hospital, but once she arrived back home, via taxi, when all sheâd wanted was to curl up in her bed and forget that the world existed for a while, she had opened the front door and found three suitcases packed and waiting. He hadnât even let her through the door.
âJames? Whatâs this?â sheâd croaked, her voice damaged by her⦠incident.
He stayed stone still, looked at her, taking in her dishevelled appearance and the mark around her neck. A mask came over his face. She knew it well: it meant that he was about to be a total prick. âIâll get right to it. I want you gone.â
âWhat? Gone where?â she asked softly, confused.
âOut of my house and out of my life. Youâre an embarrassment and a liability to me and my career. How could you do something so reckless? Did you even think about me?â His voice was cold and his words calculated. âIâll put your suitcases in your car for you, then you need to leave.â
âJust like that? Youâre throwing me out of my own home?â
âYes. You can slink back to your parentsâ house and hide out there. No one will even miss you.â
Refusing to allow him to see her cry, or how much his words
