Chapter 11

Chantrice

As I sat in the front room with Kirsten, I couldn’t stop my leg from shaking. Harley was supposed to be here to pick her up in thirty minutes. I hadn’t heard from him since lunchtime, and my nerves were on edge. He’d called to say that he would be here by six to pick up his daughter. I almost laughed on the phone. His daughter. Muthafucka since when?

I tried to talk to Kirsten the past couple of days, telling her what he was like before she was born and how happy he was when she was born, but I couldn’t answer her questions about why he didn’t continue seeing her if he loved her so much. I told her that those were questions she would have to ask him. I also told her that he called at least once a month to see how she was doing. However, I purposely left out that he would mainly call when he saw something I posted on Facebook about her that he didn’t like.

I was trying to make this experience better for my baby. I didn’t want her to be fearful or sad. I knew she was already uncomfortable about this, because she didn’t know him. Had he done this the right way, he could have come and introduced himself on better terms. He made it seem as if I was keeping her from him, and I hated that shit. Kirsten was afraid of her father because of what she saw. The day he and I argued and he grabbed me, had scared her. That only made her more resistant.

As we sat, she grabbed my hand. “Mommy, can I talk to Mr. Orion before I go?”

At the mention of his name, I had to smile. Our time together the other night was amazing. He’d sent a bouquet of flowers yesterday and another today, telling me how much he enjoyed our time together Wednesday night. When he left Thursday morning, neither of us wanted to let go. The sex was amazing. However, I could see that he was struggling after our first round. He told me he hadn’t had sex since long before he had the transplant, which was a total of about eight or nine months.

The way he was taking deep breaths after the first round somewhat scared me. It was like he was in pain, but he refused to say so. After a few minutes, we went for round two. Not long after that, I fell asleep. When we woke up the next morning, he was quieter than usual, but he said he was okay… just still in awe that we were in a whole ass relationship. I had giggled and stayed in his arms for nearly three hours.

We’d talked quite a bit that night once he finished what he had to do once he’d gotten back in Houston and got home, but today, we hadn’t talked much at all. He said he was extremely busy, and I could imagine so.
