Chapter 9

Candice quickly pulled on a sweater and a coat over her pajamas and stuffed her feet into boots. She and Eli didn’t spare time to talk as they rushed out to the car. He started the engine and jerked the gearshift into drive all in one motion, then drove down the dark driveway as quickly as he dared.

“Did he say exactly was going on?” she asked.

“He mentioned something about someone messing with his medicine,” he told her. “He sounded confused. I don't know exactly what's going on, but something is definitely wrong. I would just call the nursing home, but I’m not sure how much I trust them anymore.”

“At least it isn't too far,” Candice said. “I hope everything’s okay when we get there.”

It was the middle of the night, which meant that instead of just using the keypad to enter the code and let themselves in, they had to press the buzzer for the front office. A sleepy looking staff member came to the door to let them in. “We don’t usually allow visitors this late,” she told them, looking at them unhappily.

“I got an urgent call from my grandfather,” Eli explained. “I want to see him.”

Looking irritated but too tired to really care, she waved to them down the hall. “Just remember to buzz me when you're ready to leave, or else the alarm will sound,” she told them.

Eli called out an affirmative as he hurried down the hall. Candice followed him just a little bit more slowly. They both knew the way to Reggie’s room by heart. The door was shut when they got there, but it opened as soon as Eli knocked. Reggie must have been waiting by it. He looked more frightened than Candice could remember seeing him.

“Come on in,” he said, hurrying them inside and then shutting the door behind them.

“What happened?” Eli asked, looking around the room as if expecting to see an attacker there.

“Someone switched all of my pills with sugar pills,” Reggie said. “I saved them all. They’re on my nightstand.”

Candice and Eli followed Reggie into the bedroom. A small plastic cup of pills was on the nightstand. Eli dumped them out across the surface of the small table and looked at them closely. Frowning, he lifted to his mouth and touched the tip of his tongue to it.

“You’re right; they’re just sugar pills,” he said, frowning. “How long has this been going on, Reggie?”

“I'm pretty sure this is the first night it has happened,” Reggie said. “I tasted the difference right away. I always put the pills in my mouth and let them sit there for a second or two while I grab my cup of water. As soon as I realized the problem with this batch, I called you.”

“You did the right thing,” Eli said.

“This means that someone here is trying to hurt you,” Candice said, shaken. “The medications are pretty strictly regulated, aren't they?”

“They are,” Eli said grimly. “I'm not sure what to think about this.”

“That's why I called you instead of contacting someone from the office,” Reggie said.
