Chapter 15

Matthew entered the kitchen ahead of everyone, going straight to the coffee maker. He dialed up the strongest espresso the machine could produce and brewed it. With the delicate cup in hand, he gazed at Sarah, Pixie, and the children, finally downing most of his espresso in a single gulp. He grimaced as the scalding liquid burned his mouth.

"Could someone please explain what just happened?" he asked.

"I don't know," Sarah replied, pouring water for the children and herself.

"That…" Matthew gestured vaguely towards the stairs. "That… Is she — that — out for good?"

"For a while, yes. But it will be good to keep our guard up nonetheless."

Matthew brought his hands up to his face and pressed his fingertips into his temples. "I must be going insane," he groaned. "And you are saying this is…"

"Amelia."

Matthew squeezed his eyes shut, pulled up a chair, and sank heavily into it. "Let's assume you're right for a moment."

"Let's."

"And that's Amelia Thompson."

"It is."

"Cool," Cory exclaimed, his eyes shining with an excitement Sarah hadn't seen in ages. "We have a ghost. Far out."

"Why is she here?" Matthew asked. "In all the time I've lived in Rosewood Hollow, I've never heard of this house being haunted. Believe me, I would have. But more importantly, what are you going to do about her — it?"

Sarah sipped her water, feeling the ice-cold, lemon-tinged liquid glide down her throat. Something within her expanded and grew, a power she'd never felt before, a strength that had been absent for most of her life, while she was busy being an obedient, reticent wife and mother. She straightened up slightly, lifted her head, and felt the tingling extend down her arms and into her hands. She spread her fingers and stared at them in wonder. For once, it was liberating not to be consumed by fear.

"I haven't figured that out yet, Matthew," she replied calmly. "If there's any threat to the children or me, I'll leave this house faster than you can imagine, trust me."

“No,” Cory and Emma chorused almost as one. A ghost was the best thing that had happened to them in ages, and they were not ready to let it go. Sarah raised her hand and both of them stopped mid-whine and looked down at their laps. Another new thing in her life.

Pixie strolled into the kitchen then, and Sarah reached down, inviting the little dog onto her lap. Pixie settled on her knees and surveyed the room. For a while, no one spoke. Then, Pixie turned, placed her paws on Sarah's shoulder, and gently nuzzled her cheek, as if wanting to play.

Do you trust me?

Always.

Then listen.

Pixie pressed her head against Sarah's, and suddenly, a torrent of images flooded into her mind — sights, sounds, and stories. The overwhelming onslaught made her want to run outside to escape the tales of destinies, sorrows, and victories that kept coming one after the other. Images of her house, the inhabitants, people, animals, friends and foes. Just as the pressure became unbearable and her breaths grew shallow, Pixie withdrew.
