Whiskers waited impatiently outside the door to the rescue office. He’d seen the policeman arrive again with two more dogs. Two more pets taken from their families by the man in the van, most likely. He was anxious to speak to them and get their stories but Allison and the policeman were too busy eating pizza.

Eventually, the door opened. Whiskers fell in line while Allison led the way, carrying the Pomeranian around the cages and back to the play area. The police officer led the poodle who walked nervously behind him, just close enough to avoid being tugged by the lead attached to the collar Allison had placed on her.

“Hi. I’m Whiskers. Don’t be too worried. This is a pretty nice place. They’re taking you to the play area for some pictures. You’ll get to choose a toy from the basket.”

The poodle didn’t reply or look at Whiskers. She stayed focused on the man holding her lead and did her best not to make eye contact with any of the animals they walked past. Bones made that difficult.

“Ooooh… welcome pretty lady! Look at that nail polish. You must be fancy! Be sure to tell them you want the penthouse cage!”

A few of the other dogs laughed. The poodle couldn’t help but look to see who was saying these things.

“Ignore him,” Whiskers meowed. “Bones tries to get under everybody’s fur but he’s just a big puppy. What’s your name?”

“Chanel,” the poodle finally answered. “They can’t keep me here. My human will be looking for me.” She didn’t sound too confident about that.

Whiskers reassured her. “I’m sure you’re right. Can you tell me how you ended up here? Was there a man in a van involved? Wearing red cowboy boots?”

Chanel stopped moving, causing Fred to accidentally jerk her lead.

“C’mon. Almost there. You’ll like the play area.”

Chanel started walking again but looked over at Whiskers. “How did you know that? Do you work with him?”

“Oh, no!” Whiskers was stung by the accusation but eager to find out more. “I’m trying to convince this policeman to lock him up, whoever he is. He’s already kidnapped at least five pets, including the two of you. Did you notice anything else about him? Or his van?”

“I noticed the carpet had never been cleaned. He’s lucky it didn’t ruin my pedicure! And there was some picture on the side. One of those horses with the long necks.”

Whiskers was confused. “A horse with a long neck?”

They had reached the play area and the policeman let go of Chanel’s lead. Allison pointed out the basket of toys and told Fred to empty it onto the grass. Chanel scurried away to the far corner of the fenced-in area but the Pomeranian jumped into the toys, grabbing hold of a lion plush toy.

“I’ll show you who the king of the jungle is!” he barked as he slung the toy around. He was working out some frustration.

Allison snapped pictures and encouraged the small dog to keep it up.
