Chapter Twenty

At the Vose Galleries

One of the most delightful exhibits of the season opened yesterday at the Vose Galleries with the preview of Mr John Lavalle’s notable group of portraits. Mrs Lavalle, whose portrait is one of this collection, wore simple distinctive black with huge creamy gardenias as she received yesterday with Mr Lavalle, and others there yesterday whose portraits afforded interesting studies were Mrs George H. Lyman Jr in hunters green velvet with cleaver blouse of matching lame and little peaked hat of velvet, Mrs Basil Gavin in stunning coat of black moire caracul, Miss Natalie Folsom in fetching black with sparkling twin slips of frosty leaves, and Mrs Henry G. Rowland took the boxes of drawings and the letters as well as the unsigned portrait, promising Bradford that they would be returned to the studio in time. The old valet was vigilant in the guardianship of his late master’s home and unhappy that the contents of the studio in particular were being disturbed. Rowland tried to explain.

Otis is also a popular name among the Norcrosses, it being the name of their most illustrious ancestor, who was once mayor of Boston. Some of the Otis Norcrosses are numbers I, II, and so forth, but Mr.
