26.

Brian Carlisle and Lilly Carr, a paralegal from Carlisle and Associates, arrived half an hour after my call. I had met Lilly several months earlier while investigating Brian Carlisle for the murder of Hailey Bowman, a former client with whom he had been having an affair. The case was tawdry and complicated, but Lilly had provided me information that let me clear Carlisle. Without her, he’d likely be sitting in a jail cell, awaiting trial, today.

I met them in the parking lot outside the police department.

“Thanks for coming,” I said. “Kate’s inside. They’re holding her in a cell, and they’ve charged her with burglary for allegedly breaking into a local elementary school while teachers were in the building.”

Carlisle considered and drew in a breath. “Anything you can tell me that would help her case?”

It was a lawyer’s question; he didn’t want the truth. He came as an advocate.

“Recently a student at the high school threatened a mass shooting. Every school in the district went into lockdown. You might have seen it on the news.”

Carlisle and Lilly nodded but said nothing.

“Kate talked to Owen and Sam about it. Sam had no idea what was going on, but Owen understood that they went into hiding because someone had threatened them somehow. He told Kate that if a shooter did make it into the school, he’d hide by the tornado slide on the playground or behind a pillar in the cafeteria because he thought those would be able to stop bullets. Barring that, he wanted Kate to know where she’d find his body in case he died.”

Carlisle exhaled slowly. Lilly covered her mouth.

“That’s awful,” she said. “How old is he?”

“Six.”

Carlisle regained his composure quickly. “And the police allege your spouse broke into the school to do what? Protect Owen?”

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “They claim she broke into the school while there were teachers and possibly students inside and that she took pictures, which she then posted to Facebook alongside a post describing how scared Owen and his classmates were. That she wrote the post is not in dispute. It’s been shared a few thousand times and written about in the paper. The provenance of the pictures is still unknown, though. From what I’ve seen, several people responded with pictures from other schools showing places where they expect to die if a shooter came in. It’s a protest.”

“That’s good,” said Brian. He paused and tilted his head to the side. “She’s sympathetic, and the prosecutors will come off as if they’re trying to squelch free speech for going after her.”

I swallowed hard and nodded.

“I’m glad you think so,” I said. “This might not be the kind of case you do anymore, but I didn’t know who else to call. We can talk about billing and business stuff later, but for now, I just want her out of jail.”

Carlisle’s lips curled upward.

“Buddy, you can’t afford me,” he said. “My firm will be taking this pro bono, but I’m here to represent Kate. She’s going to be the client, so she’s going to be in charge.
