Within a few days, everybody in the district had heard about the stolen wood. The twins were branded as thieves and they and their stepfather were watched carefully from that day forward.

Domko arrived home from town one afternoon a few weeks later, ranting and raving that he’d been discounted at the creamery for having too much milk in the bottom of the cream can. It was a trick he pulled most of the time, pouring in milk to top up the can, but this time he’d been caught during a random check.

Employees at the Co-op were also watching Domko. He’d been caught stealing goods by stuffing them inside stovepipes, then only paying for the pipe. He also lined his coat pockets with chocolate bars and small tools. Sometimes they caught him, sometimes they didn’t.
