NIA DIDN’T GET shivved on her way back from the bathroom. Nor did Michal when she left and returned to the line at the Haunted Mansion for the very same reason, much to Nia and Jade’s delight. They were still laughing about it when they got into the parlor room that doubled as an elevator down to the ride, and they were shushed by an elementary schooler.

“Can I tell this kid that I have cancer and I got it from shushing?” Michal whispered.

“Absolutely not,” Nia and Jade whispered back.

“I wasn’t going to,” she said, although they all knew she would have at the slightest encouragement.

They went to Splash Mountain next, strategically timed at the heat of the day so that they’d dry off the quickest. Michal and Jade could make fun of her all they wanted, but at the end of the day, they appreciated her attention to detail.

The line crept forward, and the returning logs came into view for the first time.

“Holy shit, those people are soaked,” Jade said. “I don’t remember getting that wet the last time I was here. Don’t say it, Michal.”

“First, it’s no ‘I’m dying’ jokes, then it’s no clever riffing on accidental innuendo?” Michal huffed. “Tough crowd.”

“Clever riffing?” Nia laughed. “You were just going to say ‘that’s what she said!’”

“You don’t know what I was going to say. And now you never will.”

“The people getting off that length of wood look much less wet,” Jade said.

Michal groaned, throwing her hands up. “Okay, you have to be doing that on purpose.”

“I don’t hear it,” Jade said, but the twitch of her lips as she tried to keep from smiling gave her away.

“I have a secret,” Michal said.

“Please don’t say you’re dying,” Nia replied.

Michal glared. “I’ve stopped. For today. Anyway, there are children around, so lean in.” Nia and Jade did as told, and Michal wrapped her arms around both their waists. “I snuck some gummies in,” she whispered.

Nia furrowed her brow, confused. “I’m the only one who brought a bag.”

“They’re in my bra.”

“They better be the individually wrapped kind,” Jade said.

“Why, you don’t want to taste my boob sweat?” She pouted.

Nia laughed. “Let’s leave that to Jonah.”

“I am truly so okay with him being your boyfriend, but please don’t say stuff like this in front of me.”

“Nia’s the one who said it!” Michal complained, and Nia laughed again.

“I don’t care who said it, I need the line to be drawn somewhere, preferably on the other side of me picturing my twin brother’s mouth on your tits.”

“Nobody said you had to picture it,” Michal said.

“I hate you guys,” Jade said.

“We’ll stop,” Nia said. “Promise.” She elbowed Michal in her side.

“What?” she asked, and Nia shot her a flat look. “Okay, yes, I promise to keep the sex-with-Jonah jokes to a minimum. Even if this one was Nia’s fault.”

“Thank you,” Jade said.

“I thought you were abolitionists, but you won’t stop policing my jokes!” They both groaned. “See? Anyway, they’re individually wrapped, but don’t act like you wouldn’t take them if they weren’t.
