Cognitive Skill Building

Although dyslexia does not affect intelligence, many children with dyslexia have difficulties with short-term memory, logical reasoning, perceptual discrimination, or other thought processes. Some educators believe that these deficits are at the root of the reading problems associated with dyslexia, and have developed programs aimed at building these underlying skills. The idea is to exercise the brain so as to improve your child’s memory, ability to concentrate, and integrate new information, in the same way physical conditioning exercises might be used to build an athlete’s strength before practicing his sport.

Audiblox

Audiblox is a system of exercises aimed at the development of foundational learning skills, developed by Dr. Jan Strydom, a South African educator. The goal is to improve cognitive abilities such as concentration, perceptual skills, memory, number concepts, and motor coordination. Although it is possible to hire a therapist to work with your child, Audiblox materials are designed for ease of use and are sold in kit form. The kit contains colored blocks and cards printed with colored patterns, and a book detailing games and practice activities using these materials. The kit also includes a student reading book with a story made up of the most commonly used words in English, and word cards and lists to be learned by memory in conjunction with reading the book. Although geared for all ages, Audiblox can also be started with children as young as age three. The program developers recommend that your school-age child practice the exercises for about three hours a week; you should expect to see improvements within six weeks to three months of sustained practice.

PACE and BrainSkills

Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE) is an intense program of exercises targeted to strengthen weak skills, such as difficulties with memory or processing speed. BrainSkills is a simplified version of the PACE program developed for home use. Both programs are done with a parent or tutor working one-on-one with the child, usually for an hour a day over the course of twelve weeks, with sequenced and repetitive activities that become progressively more difficult as the child’s skill level increases. The program can address skills such as processing speed, working memory, visual processing, auditory analysis, and logical reasoning. A related program called Master the Code is specifically geared toward reading skills.
