BEGINNING YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL Self-Wellness Routine

Let’s take a moment and observe your surroundings. After reading these words – look around your immediate surroundings. Look around for five minutes. Use these prompts to guide your observations and write down your thoughts.

• Describe what you see.

• Describe what you hear.

• Describe what you feel (physically and emotionally).

• Describe what you smell and taste.

• Describe what you are doing.

That last prompt was not placed there as a trick or to confuse you. Did you notice that once you began this exercise that your thoughts began to provide definitions and explanations to what you were experiencing? Over our lifetime, we have learned or gained knowledge about the world around us through our five senses. These senses gain the experiences from the environment which we live in and shape our understanding and comprehension of information.

Environmental Self-Wellness does not require уоu tо join a movement or organization tо adopt healthy habits to promote healthy surroundings. However, you will need to engage in some self-reflection (as we have done with the previous exercise) to gain insight on your current level of environmental awareness. Beginning with small, simple changes to your surroundings, will result in a more balanced lifestyle. Here, we have some strategies for you to practice starting a healthy environmental wellness routine – some taken from our The Guide Key™ Blog (2019):

• Get organized (National Institutes of Health, 2018). This may seem strange, but your environmental state is important for your inner happiness. Organizing your living space significantly relieves stress in your life. When everything has a place, it streamlines your routine and creates more time for you to do the things that bring you joy.

• Making your bed can improve your whole day. It turns out your mother was right! Research shows that this small task in your daily routine can make or break your whole day. It’s the first task you can check off for the day, and it can lower stress when your environmental surroundings feel put together.

• Being kind to the earth can help you feel better about yourself. Taking care of your environmental surroundings can be beneficial to your own well-being. There are everyday practices you can commit to, like recycling or carpooling, that will boost your mood by helping the planet.

• Show respect and gratitude.

• Be safe. Watch for others on the road and engage in safe practices in everything you do. (i.e. wear a seatbelt while driving a car, etc.) (National Institutes of Health, 2018).

• Support. Surround yourself with positive people and things that will support your goals.

Productivity and organization are linked with our environment. When we live within a disorganized space, our thinking sometimes reflects this disorganization, which impacts our productivity and could foster a feeling of being overwhelmed. This adds stress to our everyday lives. Our connection to environments has evolved over time, but the fundamental principle remains – we are influenced by the environment and the environment is influenced by us.
