The Lion and the Tiger

LONG AGO, at the foot of a mountain, there lived a lion and a tiger in the same large cave. It was very unusual for such beasts to live together, but they had become friends and most of the time they got along. A hermit lived in a small cave nearby and was likewise friends with the formidable cats.

One day, the lion and the tiger were sitting outside their cave, engaged in a dispute about the weather.

“No!” said the tiger. “You are wrong! The cold comes with the waning of the moon!”

“I told you, foolish tiger,” roared the lion, “it is always with the waxing of the moon that the cold comes to this mountain!”

The two argued and argued until finally they decided to ask the hermit to settle the matter.

“Dear hermit,” they called to their friend in his cave. “Please come out and settle this for us.”

The hermit appeared and asked what troubled them. The lion and the tiger both put forward their cases.

The hermit thought for a long while, knowing that to keep the peace required a solution that would offend neither of the great cats.

“It is not the waning or the waxing of the moon that brings the cold, but the wind,” he said. “Whether the moon grows larger or smaller matters not to the wind, so you are both completely right.”

The lion and the tiger saw the wisdom of the hermit’s words, smiled at one another, and returned to their cave as friends once more.
