"Two hundred gulden," the man replied.

Two hundred gulden was a large sum of money. It amounted to almost the entire remainder of Mrs. Shlemiel's dowry. But when Shlemiel thought it over, he carne to the conclusion that such a trumpet was more than worth the money. In Chelrn there were many fires each year, especially in summertime. Houses and entire streets burned down. Although chere were several firemen in Chelrn, their equipment consisted of a single wagon drawn by an ancient nag. By the time the wagon arrived with its one barrel of water, everything had usually burned down.

Shlemiel hadn't the slightest doubt that the owner of a fire-fighting trumpet could make a fortune. He told the man that he would like to buy such a trumpet and the other was more than willing to supply one. It was nor long before he delivered a huge brass trumpet and a written guarantee chat when blown it would extinguish all fires.

Shlerniel was overjoyed. This time he was sure he was on his way to becoming a rich man.

Back in Chelrn, Shlemiel displayed to his family and neighbors the amazing instrument he had brought back from Lemberg. The word spread quickly and soon the people of Chelm were divided; some believed in the trumpet's powers and others maintained that Shlerniel
