Eric’s face was alight with boyish excitement as he reached into his suitcase and pulled out a huge spiral notebook.

“I have something to show you, Les!” He could barely contain his enthusiasm.

It was our honeymoon—by far the most incredible two weeks of my life. After waiting for what had seemed like an eternity we were finally married. And just when I thought I had discovered the depth of Eric’s love for me, he took it to yet a deeper level.

“See all these letters?” he said, flipping through page after page of notebook paper. “I wrote these to you years before we ever met. I’ve been saving them for our honeymoon!”

For hours, I pored over the letters, fascinated by this man I had married. I was intrigued by his amazing journey as a single person, before I had known him.

“Tonight I am on a mission trip in Bulgaria,” read one, “and I long for you to be with me in the joy of ministering Gods truth.”

“I am gazing at a gorgeous sunset,” said another, “and it’s not the same without you here to share it. I don’t know where you are tonight, but I’m praying for you. I love you.”

Though the letters were not addressed to me, they may as well have had my name on them. Each one, in its unique way, told of Eric’s unfailing love and devotion to the woman who would one day share life with him. His faithfulness to me before we met gave me such security in our marriage. As I read the letters, I felt more like a princess than I ever thought possible. What an honor to be chosen by God to be that special woman to love this man for a lifetime!

It may seem strange that I would begin a chapter on singleness with a story of my incredible honeymoon. No, I am not trying to be cruel. This is not just a chapter about being single. This is a chapter about being single with a purpose. Whenever God takes us through a challenging time, we can endure the pain if we cling to the hope that in the end we will discover that it was all for a purpose, just as Christ “for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2). We can know that someday it will all be worth it. Whether your singleness ends with a romantic dream come true here on this earth or a glorious celebration in eternity, God does have an ultimate purpose in mind for this solo season of your life.

When Eric was finally able to share those letters with me, he realized, This was worth all those years of waiting. This was worth all those lonely, rainy nights. And one day you, too, will be able to echo his words.
