She drifted down the pier behind him, two stemmed glasses in her left hand and a bottle of Pinot Noir in her right. She set them atop the tabletop fire pit cover before she sat and flapped open a thick quilted placemat and set it across her lap. Andrew lowered the steaming plate onto her protected thighs as she breathed in the salty aroma. She had never thought of that particular dish as lakefront picnic fare, but she was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The scent of the butter and garlic blended with the enormous scallops mingled perfectly with the cool evening breeze and the glowing orange and purple sky mirroring off the water.

Andrew filled the two glasses and handed her one. Holding his up, he toasted, “To one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever laid eyes on.”

One of many. We all look the same. Rebecca kept her thoughts to herself and flashed him a shy smile instead. Clinking his glass, she filled her mouth with the wine to prevent her from speaking her mind.

“Wow,” he said, his mouth half-full.

“You like it?”

“This is amazing.” His eyes were wide as he swallowed.

She giggled at his obvious excitement.

“No, you don’t understand. This is one of my favorite dishes and I’ve had it more times than I can remember at the best restaurants across the country.” He took another bite and, once again, didn’t wait to swallow. “I’ve never had it like this.”

“Well, I’m glad I can impress you.”

“Oh, I’m beyond impressed. What’s in here that’s different?” He pointed at his plate with his fork.

“A chef never gives away her secrets,” she said smugly, hoping he didn’t catch the irony of what she had just said.

“I’ll get it out of you somehow,” he teased.

Rebecca took a bite herself. He was right...it was amazing. She washed it down with another sip of wine and changed the subject before she got herself into trouble.

“So, do you have any brothers or sisters?”

“Nope. Just me.”

“Where do your parents live? Are they local?” She watched his shoulders tense at her questions.

“My parents are dead.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” The awkward turn of the conversation was almost palpable. Not knowing how to retrace her steps, she forged on. “Both of them?”

“Yes. Simultaneously.” He stared into his glass, swirling the red liquid. “It was a car accident. A pile-up on Ninety-Five. Some idiot truck driver jackknifed his semi and...game over.” He downed the rest of his wine and refilled.

“That’s horrible.” Rebecca truly felt sorry for him. To lose both parents at the same time without warning was devastating, and she could see it still affected him. “How old were you?”

“I was in college. It was a long time ago...before Spencer was born.” His voice was gruff and low.

She had definitely gone down the wrong path. In one quick moment he’d gone from culinary heaven to parentless hell. He stabbed at his food in silence, his brow cinching tighter and tighter. She had no idea how to close the wounds she had just opened.
