CHAPTER 15

Today is a big day. Election Day. It’s the one day when men stop working and vote. Papa went to the Town Hall right after breakfast to cast his ballot. Mr. Taft is running against William Jennings Bryan. Mr. Bryan already lost two elections against President McKinley, and Papa thinks he’ll lose this one as well.

He told Mama he was voting for Mr. Taft because Theodore Roosevelt thought he was the best man for the job. Mr. Roosevelt is a popular president who helped small businesses like Papa’s, so his opinion on things carries a lot of weight as far as Papa is concerned.

We take a mock vote at school. Miss Carlisle talks about the work of the suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Our teacher’s eyes get sparkly and her voice rises when she tells us about this movement. I want to tell her that Charlie and I saw her the day of the rally, but Charlie thinks that would embarrass her. Miss Carlisle never once mentions it, so I suspect he may be right. At least in our pretend election, girls can vote, and when the ballots are counted, Mr. Taft wins by a landslide.
