Visitor invasion
Why does my dog Dumbo always run out and greet my friends by racing around, barking his head off and behaving like a stupid maniac? Please help me stop his really annoying behaviour.
Dumbo isnât as stupid as you think. Thereâs a good reason why heâs acting like a maniac around your visitors: he regards them as intruders invading his territory and heâs trying to grab control of them by winning plenty of challenges.
He achieves this by ensuring heâs the first to meet your visitors the moment they walk inside the gate. He can lure them into submissively patting him. He can invade the visitorsâ personal space by dominantly jumping up on them. He can bark noisily so no-one else can be heard. He can race around, herding everyone together. He can deliberately trip people over. He can step on their feet. He can force people to take submissive detours around him. And, finally, he can race through the front door first to show he owns the inside of your house as well. The result? If Dumbo wins that many victories then he easily wins the right to be the boss of everyone.
Itâs simple to stop your dog annoying your visitors. When you know visitors are about to arrive, clip Dumbo on a secured leash out in your backyard. When your friends arrive, ask them to completely ignore him for the entire visit. Dumbo should soon switch off and relax.
After an hour or so of him being submissively quiet, you can try unclipping him, but ask your friends to continue ignoring him. If he starts misbehaving, all you have to do is clip him back on his leash.
