Chapter 8

I Don’t Want to Grow Up

During our youth, many of us have had one or two friends we felt might never really grow up: the perpetual class clowns, the party hearty types, and those that refused to accept responsibility for their actions. Rick and I have rescued a few dogs that also fit perfectly into that category. Patch and Taffy came to us as six-week-old puppies, both born with sight disabilities from their double dapple breeding, and both refused to grow up.

Patch

Early in 2002, we got a call about a puppy that had been rescued from a breeder in south Texas. With the help of our friend, Christine, Patch came to the sanctuary as an addition to a previously planned transport, and the entire world fell love. Her coat was black, brown, gray, and white, and her huge eyes sparkled with attitude. Two days after I put her picture and story on our website, I received several applications to adopt her. Our policy, however, stood firm; no dogs left our sanctuary until they had been spayed. Patch would need to stay with us for at least three months. During that time, Patch became an integral part of our pack dynamic.
