Flight is always the preferred defence strategy of the cat, and this individual is ready to spring out of the way if the perceived threat gets too close.
Saying hello
The tail is very expressive since not only is it capable of a whole range of movements â up and down and from side to side â but also the tip can be moved independently of the base. During greeting, cats use their tail position to test out the potential reaction of the other individual and avoid rejection.
An upright tail is a friendly gesture that signals a non-threatening approach. If used as a prelude to rubbing it is a request for permission to interact and an important way of ensuring that the interaction that follows is friendly. A raised tail also signals an intention to discover more about the other cat as it exposes the genital region and invites the other individual to sniff underneath and find out all about that cat. As well as holding the tail high, cats will also alter the position of the tail tip during greeting, and the way in which the tip is bent over appears to be very specific to the individual.
