Of the traditions that have really honed ‘roadmaps’ to mindful awareness, Buddhism has done so most thoroughly. Developed and refined over the centuries, Buddhist mental training techniques are a very clear path to develop the specific type of awareness that is mindfulness (present moment, non-reactive and non-judgemental).

The Buddhist connection

In Buddhist traditions dating back to the 5th century BC, mindfulness training is a foundational skill, the overarching intention of which is to gain mastery over the mind in order to reduce suffering for all beings (including the self). Mindfulness in this context supports many more advanced Buddhist practices (including those that train attention, insight, visualization and heart-centred exercises). Yet, it is also in and of itself a very powerful awareness development process.

The specificity and detail of the Buddhist path to develop mindful awareness naturally appeals to Western scientific minds who are now studying this topic with renewed interest. This has led many to believe that mindfulness comes solely from Buddhism. However, it is not the only origin. In fact, Buddhist thought itself was informed by earlier Indian thinking, and a number of other ancient civilizations also investigated how to develop mindful awareness.
