LENNY

15.20pm

Lenny holds his eyes closed before whistling a slow, soft, satisfied exhale through his thin lips.

‘Thank you, Sir,’ he says. ‘You’ve been most helpful.’

‘No. Thank you, Mr Horata for being a customer of Iko Cable. Maybe you will be a customer of Iko Cable again someday.’

‘Maybe,’ Lenny says, before stabbing a finger to the phone, ending the call.

Without hesitating he clicks into the Amazon Customer Service chat again. No reply. Not since 14:44pm.

‘Thirty-six fuckin’ minutes ago,’ he says, dropping the phone back into the pocket of his jacket and turning into the deathly silence of the house. When, somewhere in the distance there is a promise of sound… Purring at first. Then wailing. Louder… and louder. Wheels can be heard screeching over the siren. Not that far from the lonely, vacant house Lenny was now stood in. The siren screams, echoing outside, and then tyres screech to a halt, causing Lenny to race to the blue front door, snatching it open. To see two black BMWs with flashing blue lights on their roofs parked diagonally across Vetrna Street, their tyres steaming. He nods at the smartly-dressed man stomping out of the first car, before his brow begins to dip as that man sprints towards him.

‘No, no, no,’ a woman calls. A familiar voice. A voice Lenny has heard too many times already today. ‘Leave him. He’s with us. That’s our guy.’

‘Olette,’ Lenny says, squinting at the rolled-down front window of the second BMW. ‘What the fuck? I’ve been trying to… trying to call.’

‘I told you we’d be here,’ Olette says, as she pushes the door open and steps out. ‘Well?’

She leans her back against the door of the BMW.

‘Well, what?’ Lenny says.

‘Is this the address?’

‘It is,’ he says, nodding. ‘But we were too late. Minutes too late. There’s evidence in the back bedroom. Ropes. Ropes that were used to tie Sofie and Liam to the bed post. They’re gone.’

‘How do you know they were tied to a bed post, Moon?’ a gruff voice grunts.

Lenny squints, beyond the smartly-dressed man standing in front of him to the side of Olette, to see bushy eyebrows like upside Nike logos hovering above beady eyes, glaring through the gap of the wound-down back window.

Lenny steps off the concrete step.

‘I, uh… I know they were tied by ropes to a bedpost because Sofie and Liam told me themselves. Through the Amazon Customer Service chat on the Kindle…’

As Lenny steps closer to the second BMW, the bloated face of Dr Volgt becomes clearer, his chin rounded and nodding, his cheeks wobbling.

‘Good work, Moon. Good work.’

‘Not good enough though, is it?’ Lenny says, shrugging. ‘We were too late. I told you,’ he says, darting his stare at Olette. ‘I told you over the phone we needed feet on the ground. That we needed to be quick.’

‘We were quick,’ Olette replies. ‘Didn’t you hear us?’

Lenny puffs out his cheeks as Dr Volgt snatches the back door of the second BMW open, heaving his large frame from the back seat and relieving the tyres of their pressure.
