97. John’s vision of “mission accomplished” includes several notable elements. The holy city does not require natural or artificial light since the glory of God gives it light and the Lamb is its lamp (Rev 21:11,23; 22:5). The city is without a sanctuary for the Lord God and the Lamb are its temple (21:22). As a result, believers as a royal priesthood have direct and immediate fellowship with God (Jer 31:33; John 4:23,24; Heb. 8:8). The throne of God is within the city; from this location our Lord reigns with love (Rev 22:3–4). Finally, the size of the city is too large for imagination because it includes citizens from every nation (21:24). Taken together, these elements show that the mission of God includes the merging of heaven and earth. Creation, then, is not destroyed but rather “the unification of heaven and earth is such that the renewed earth itself becomes Yahweh’s throne room.” For this last point, see Watts, “The New Exodus/New Creational Restoration of the Image of God,” 36.
