On the Eve of the End of the World

DECEMBER 20, 2012

Some said the angels would pin back

the four winds of the earth

and toss us our white robes,

but the porch chairs are still tumbling

around the patio, and I haven’t ascended

from the couch.

I half-doze to freezing rain

rattling like the jade necklaces of Mayans

who knew nothing of Christ

when they lay down their time,

nothing of the shining 144K.

I’ll find some Mayans in the multitude

a thousand years later and tease

about the week NASA fielded tearful calls

and Facebook exploded with doomsday memes—

the same week armed men and drones

killed children in schoolrooms

and veins popped at the edge

of a fiscal cliff. The first snow

of the winter hit, too, I’ll tell them.

It was all I could see out the window

when I pulled a blanket to my chin

and, thank God,

slept through the end of the age.
