What Was the Draft?

The draft was the process of ordering young men (women were exempted) to serve two years in the US military. At eighteen, young men had to register for the armed services and received a draft card. If the number on his draft card was called up, a man had to serve, whether he wanted to or not.

During the Civil War, the draft was used by both the Union and the Confederacy. Draftees, however, were allowed to pay someone to go in their place. There were draft riots in New York City in 1863. Poor men were angry that wealthy men could buy a substitute for three hundred dollars.

During the Vietnam War, men could enlist (volunteer for the military) or wait to be drafted—healthy men were categorized as 1-A. If called up, men would fight beside enlisted soldiers in Vietnam or serve elsewhere in the world.
