Safe Houses

Safe houses are private homes whose owners volunteer to house women and their children temporarily, usually for one to three nights. A safe house, with fewer residents, is naturally a calmer environment, where you are cared for like a guest. Women without children and older women sometimes prefer this option because it is less chaotic than a shelter.

In rural areas where there are no shelters, safe houses are more commonly used to protect women. In Montana, which is almost entirely rural, there are only twelve shelters in the state, but there is a large network of safe houses and a twenty-four-hour statewide crisis hot line. Domestic violence advocates there are mostly volunteers who must sponsor flea markets and garage sales to raise the money they need to help women in abusive relationships. There may be only one advocate covering as many as seven counties.

A safe house is sometimes an alternative while you consider what you want to do or until there is room at the shelter. You can stay while waiting for a plane or train ticket or for the court to open so you can get a protective order. Sometimes a safe house is used as transitional housing after a shelter stay until you can find a more permanent home of your own.
