OTHER NSAIDs

In order to decrease side effects and increase effectiveness, NSAIDs that do not contain aspirin were developed. Ibuprofen was the first nonaspirin NSAID, and it is now available over the counter. Newer NSAIDs appear to have fewer side effects and are more convenient because some are effective taken only once per day. As I have alluded to earlier, one of the puzzling things about these drugs is that although they all do the same thing biochemically, people respond to them differently. Some patients respond to one NSAID but not another, and some people experience side effects with one NSAID but not others. It may be helpful to keep this in mind so that you do not become discouraged if the first NSAID is not effective, but your doctor wants to try different ones. Table 6 lists some of the more commonly used NSAIDs, their minimally effective doses, the expected duration of relief, and the approximate dose necessary for anti-inflammatory benefits.
