Children and mediumship

Naturally, it is extremely emotionally challenging when a close loved one dies, but it’s even more so when that death directly affects the emotional well-being of a young person. Children look to us for answers but of course, in respect to death we can’t always give them the answers they seek.

Knowing when to introduce children to the concept of mediumship is a very individualised matter. With my own children, who experienced seven family members dying across the first eight years of their young lives, discussing death and the afterlife was a very natural unfolding and learning for us all. I always spoke to them openly about death, grief and my own beliefs, but I never forced my own beliefs on them.

My husband Martin offered great balance to the conversation too, as he classes himself as an atheist. Telling him I was a medium came as quite a shock to him when we first got together, given I’d worked with him for years without bringing the subject up. On our first date, when he innocently asked me if I had any interests outside of work, he got more than he bargained for when I told him ‘Yeah, I speak to the dead in my spare time’. We did laugh about it, because the look of shock on his face was a picture as he said to me, ‘I thought you’d say surfing or something!’ I give Martin great credit though for being a true sceptic and for keeping an open mind. He supports me in my choice of work completely and has come to see me demonstrate mediumship several times now. He says he has no idea how I do what I do and that science will one day understand more. Faith has nothing to do with it for Martin, it is a matter of following the evidence.

So, believe me when I write that I did not need my children to hold the same beliefs as I do, because I realise whatever their belief, it is the one right for their own peace of mind, based on their own experience of life.

With teenagers the line between being too young for a reading and being ready to explore the afterlife, is a little less clear. When the harsh reality of life strikes and a close relative or friend dies, teenagers are often no different to many adults in the way they handle their grief. In those circumstances it’s always preferable that an adult they can trust, accompanies them through the process. Experiencing a reading with an adult is so much more preferable than a teenager taking matters into their own hands and playing around with a Ouija board or being tempted to get caught up with addictive psychic helplines.

Tayo is one such teenager who benefitted from a reading with a medium and she kindly agreed to share her own story here in her own words, to show that when mediumship is explored at the right time, responsibly and with the right people, it can be a catalyst for emotional healing no matter your age.
