Milly and Jenny went to visit the students at Spruce Street School. The principal made it extra fun by arranging for each kid to have a can of Sun Drop, a popular local soft drink. Once the students drank their pop, they crushed the cans and collected them, and E-Z bought them for recycling. That made it easy for the kids to understand the economic benefits of recycling. Milly and Jenny also explained the ecological benefits.

All of this may seem obvious now, because Milly and people like her worked very hard to make recycling an ordinary part of everyday life. But when she got started, people were only beginning to think about it. Until then, there were only a few cities that had places where you could drop off your recyclables.

In 1968, Madison, Wisconsin, had been one of the first places to set up a system to collect bundles of newspapers at the curb, just like Milly would see done in Japan ten years later. The same year, the aluminum industry in the US began to recycle used aluminum. This was the beginning of a big change around the world.
