The most fraught series of P&C meetings I ever attended was when my children were students at their local public primary school, and a group of parents decided that they wanted the school to insist that the only hats that could be worn under the ‘SunSmart’ program should be the regulation school hats. Previously, the school had a rather relaxed attitude towards the wearing of hats, believing that as long as every child was protected from the sun, then any headgear was better than none. The heat generated over the rights and wrongs of punishing children by keeping them inside if they brought the ‘wrong’ hat put the heat that radiated from the sun on even the hottest Sydney summer’s day to shame. Funnily enough, when the time came, I sent my daughters to a no-uniform high school. JC
