“My mom’s planning to come by this weekend.” April keeps her head down, her voice unusually quiet, monotone. She waited until nearly the end of our group session to say anything at all.

It’s the longest I’ve seen her not speak since I’ve known her, and for the whole hour, I’ve been trying to get her to simply look up. I’m sitting directly across from her, but she’s ignored me—and everyone else—until now.

Her usual supportive gestures with anybody in the group who shares have been missing, too. She continues to stare down at her fingers; they’re like small fish hiding at the bottom of a tank, tucked away, and hardly moving in her lap. April didn’t even look up when she spoke, simply waited until the silence stretched after Ms. Lindsey asked if anyone else had anything to share.

“And how are you feeling about that, April?” Lindsey has a way of sounding both soft, and needling at the same time. I hate it. She always gets emotional diarrhea out of the group without giving anything of herself in the process.

Leaning forward a little, I mentally will April to look at me; she merely shrugs without raising her head. Lindsey prompts, “You haven’t seen her in a while, have you?”

April lifts her eyes to mine briefly, but she quickly lowers them again, and shakes her head.

This isn’t like her at all. Usually, she’s a bullet-train on the rails to launching herself into the circle of attention.

I glance at Corey. He’s sitting to April’s left, and I wish I could switch seats with him. He’s appeared bored, and irritated through most of tonight’s session, but now he sits up, and meets my gaze with a small frown. I glance around at the rest of the circle, but everyone’s impassively watching April and Lindsey.

“Will your Aunt May be there with you?” Lindsey’s annoying throat-clearing tic introduces this seemingly innocuous bomb of a question.

April starts to shrug before she lets out an aggravated sigh, shaking her head. “Probably not. She won’t be back from her business trip. My uncle will be home though.”

“That’s good.” Lindsey pauses, and flips through her notepad for a few sheet-crinkling seconds.

April finally looks up, giving me a paper-thin smile. I try to put all my concern into one back. I haven’t talked to April since we went to the bar last week. Between classes, work, and Corey, I’ve been pretty preoccupied, only texting with her. She hadn’t mentioned her mom.

Before Lindsey can continue, April interrupts her. “I don’t want to talk more about it.” She smiles apologetically at her before locking gazes with me. “I just wanted you to know what’s up with me.”

“Of course. As I’ve said before, you can always call me, if you’d like to schedule any one-on-one appointments, or need to talk after your visit with your mom.” April gives her another tight smile, and thanks her. I mouth call me and get a slightly more relaxed smile and nod.

“Anyone else have any—”

“Have you ever told your mom off, April?” Corey’s voice is low yet overrides Lindsey’s easily.
