John sighs. The screen beams the questionnaire results up at him. He scored a 7. It was at once the biggest shock of his life and the most obvious possible outcome. Had he really needed a questionnaire to tell him he had a problem? Yet somehow he had. It had always been too easy to explain his behaviour with a mixture of self-deprecation and pride. He’d been a big drinker since college, when he could drink more than men twice his size and still make it to class at eight the next morning. In a way he felt like the same punk kid, but he was approaching middle age now, and while his capacity might not have changed, his ability to bounce back the next morning certainly had.

The divorce should have woken him up. It was his drinking that killed his marriage, after all. He’d as good as shoved a bottle down its throat and drowned it with liquor. Yet it was always so easy to blame Stacey. She’s uptight. She’s too clingy. She’s always cutting me down in front of my mom and dad and brother. That the “cutting down” was mostly pleas for them to help her curb his drinking seemed easy to ignore in the moment, less so now.

But if anything could get through to him, it was his children. Sandy’s disgust and Bo’s hurt had come together like oil and flame, igniting a beacon that cut through the fog and straight to the heart of him. He might be high-functioning enough to do his job well — he still prided himself on that, however perversely — but to parent well, he needed to be dry.

John checked his calendar and saw a check-up scheduled with his family doctor next month. He called the office and asked to have it bumped up to next week. He’d lay the whole thing bare and see what the doctor had to say. There had to be something out there to help him.
