Diego Maradona

This World Cup welcomed three new teams: Canada, Iraq, and Denmark.

But Argentina, with its hotheaded star Diego Maradona, was the team to watch. His temper got him ejected from the 1982 Cup, in a game against Brazil. Now, Maradona was ready to shine.

Who Gets In?

In 1982, twenty-four teams played in the World Cup. And in 1998, the field grew to thirty-two teams. The road to play in the World Cup is long and complicated.

The host country automatically gets to play, leaving thirty-one spots. So, the approximately two hundred other teams that want to play have to compete in preliminary competitions. These competitions start two to three years before the actual World Cup! The competition is divided into six zones: Africa, Asia, Europe, CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean), Oceania (South Pacific), and South America. Before every World Cup, FIFA determines how many spots each zone will get according to the strength of the teams in that zone.
