26 | What Are Nonspectral Colors?
Up to this point, we’ve only been looking at the individual wavelengths of light that make up the visible spectrum. The mixing of individual wavelengths in the visible spectrum results in the visually diverse scene before us and includes the vast majority of the colors we see. These mixtures of light are called nonspectral colors.
Nonspectral colors include pinks, purples, dull colors, dark colors, light colors—even grays and white. A sunny yellow rose might appear to be a pure spectral color, but its hue is likely the result of a combination of wavelengths of light reflected back at your eye. These bright hues mimic pure spectral colors; but if you were to pass the light reflected by the rose through a prism, it would separate into more than one wavelength.
Nonspectral colors are too voluminous to count. Here is a tiny sampling.
