Plainly these texts are anything but mubinun (clear, perspicuous), which has led to the varying interpretations in the tafsir literature. Surah 2:75 does not say the Jews destroyed and replaced Allah’s words. Just the opposite—allegedly they heard the word of Allah (how, if it had been destroyed?) and knowingly perverted it. This perversion is in the realm of understanding, “after they had understood its meaning,” and the next ayah indicates deception and dishonesty among them. All of this could be understood in the sense of tahrif al-mana without implying direct textual corruption.

Surah 5:13 also speaks not of destroying, obliterating, or even inserting anything but of changing words “from their context” and “forgetting.” You cannot change words from their context if the context no longer exists. Hence obviously this text is referring to tahrif al-mana, for the words being altered already exist and are simply being mishandled and abused.

The context of Surah 5:41 is of the alleged unbelief and hypocrisy of those who oppose Muhammad. Once again the only assertion is alteration of words out of their context. This is the common problem in almost all interreligious arguments. But saying, “You are taking that out of context” is not the same as “You have removed the real words and written something else in their place and are trying to pass off your alteration as the original.”

Nickel went on to say, “Two other verses which appear very frequently in these lists are Q 3:78 and 2:79.”[143]

3:78. And there is a party of them who distort the Book with their tongues, that you may think that what they say is from the Book, when it is not from the Book. And they say: “It is from Allah,” when it is not from Allah, and they knowingly speak a lie concerning Allah.
