CONTENT

The content of a belief determines “what” we believe. The content may include what we believe about God, morality, politics, life after death, and so on. The content shapes our lives and our actions. One’s beliefs are so important that, according to Scripture, our eternal destiny is determined by what we believe about Jesus Christ.

It seems that most people today are inclined to think that the sincerity or fervency of their beliefs are more important than their content. If I believe that grape jelly will fuel my car better than gasoline, I can believe it as strongly as I want but the car isn’t going anywhere. Reality doesn’t care how fervently we believe something. What matters is not whether I strongly believe, but whether what I believe is true or not.

I’ve had friends tell me they live basically good lives and they don’t believe God will really allow anyone to go to hell. They can believe this all they want to, but the Bible is clear that there is a punishment for sin, and that Christ is the only way to find life and escape that punishment. No matter how much they believe this, if the content is not true, it isn’t worth believing. But content will shape your life whether it is true or not.
