Now, I guarantee you that average job-hunters do not try to present themselves as a potential profit to the organization they send their resume to. “Salary negotiable” is a common phrase on resumes. That means they’re thinking of themselves as a cost, and trying to soften the blow.
You represent a profit. Keep that always in your mind.
DECISION #5: JUST START WRITING, OR FIRST COLLECT ALL YOUR INFORMATION
A popular song many years ago began “I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter …” This is the approach some of us consider when it comes to crafting a resume. “I’m gonna sit right down and write …”
Sometimes that’s a virtue. Most times that’s a mistake.
When it’s a virtue, it’s because you already have a clear picture in your head of what an employer will be looking for. You will know from studies that in the first four seconds their eyes are scanning the top third of your resume for three things:6
1. Your previous job titles, with an explanation after each, in parentheses, if the meaning of that title isn’t immediately obvious.
2. The companies or organizations where you have worked, and your starting and ending dates there, listed in reverse chronological order, working backward from the most recent.
3. Your education—just your degree and institution—plus any relevant additional training you have had between then and now. If your education was long ago, and you are concerned your age will be held against you, omit any dates.
