The Sons of Liberty dressed themselves as Native Americans, who were often used as symbols of America.

Intolerable Acts

Before the events of the Boston Tea Party, there were members of the British government who were sympathetic to the colonists. However, when news of the destruction reached London, the British government was united in its anger. They wanted to punish those responsible and bring the colonies back under British authority.

As punishment, the British government passed a group of five laws in 1774. The British called these laws the Coercive Acts or the Intolerable Acts. The first act closed Boston Harbor to all ships until the British East India Company had been repaid for the 342 crates of tea destroyed during the Boston Tea Party. The harbor was a major source of supplies, and its closure angered both Patriots and Loyalists.

The second act attempted to change the government of Massachusetts.

It required nearly all appointments to governing positions in the Massachusetts Bay colony to be made by the governor, the king, or parliament. It also limited the number of town meetings Massachusetts colonists could hold to just one per year. This act caused a lot of concern throughout the colonies. They worried that the British might suddenly also control their governments.
