âThey donât know what theyâre talking about,â said Katie. She put her arm around Lily. âYouâre the hero. Youâre the one who figured out this whole plot against the world by Larry. Youâre the one who figured out that Larry was a half-whale, half-human whatsit.â
âHybrid.â
âYeah. Youâre the one who figured out what his teeth really mean. And youâre the one who just saved my life by figuring out what to do with the mirror.â
Lily looked in the mirror at her squat five-foot-one-inch frame and her flat brown hair that completely covered her eyes, except when she blew on it diagonally.
âThatâs okay,â she said. âItâs your story.â
âNoââ said Katie. âItâs your story. You have to realize that it really is. Itâs only when people realize that the story can be about them that they can start to change things.â
Lily said glumly, âWe have a lot to change. By three days from now.â
âExactly,â said Katie. âAnd if you keep believing that this is Jasperâs story or my story, you wonât be ready to give everything to the story and save us all from the stilt-walking laser-beam whales.â
Lily nodded. âWhat are we going to do?â she asked.
Katie flicked her hard on the arm. âItâs your story. You decide.â
âWell,â said Lily. âWe should learn about the weaknesses of whales.â
âYeah,â said Katie. âWe can go to the library.â
âOr to an oceanographical institute.â
âA what?â
âA place that studies the sea.â
âYeah!â said Katie.
âAnd we should ask my dad for more details about the stilts and the accessories. He might have heard other things that we can use against the whale army.â
âGood idea!â said Katie.
âAnd we should figure out where theyâre going to come onto land first. If we can pinpoint that,â said Lily, getting excited, âwe could be there waiting for them...â
âNow youâre planning!â said Katie. âSee? This is great!â
Lily smiled shyly. âSo youâll share the story?â she said. âNot that I need my own story.â
âEveryone needs their own story,â said Katie. âThis one is yours.â
Lily nodded awkwardly. âIâm glad I have someone to share it with,â she said.
âThanks,â said Katie, grinning and resting her head against Lilyâs. âIâll remember that when weâre both being fried by a humpback whale with ray-gun eyes.â
