Suranne stood far back from the cordon tape, and the ambulances, and the flashing blue lights of the police vehicles, hidden by the surrounding trees. She didn’t know yet exactly what had happened, but the lack of response on the radio, and the burgundy sheen she could see coating the road gave her some idea.

This would be difficult to cover up. Not impossible, of course—nothing was impossible—but it would take time, money, and a lot of resources. If those above her found out, they would not be pleased.

She’d have to make sure they didn’t.

“It looks like he got away,” one of the men behind her remarked.

“Well, clearly he fucking got away,” she hissed, not taking her eyes off the scene. “I want him found. Today. I don’t care what you have to do. I don’t care what it takes. We find him. And then, we kill him.”

She turned to face them, and the whole squad straightened to attention.

“Are we all fucking clear on that?” she asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” they said in unison, and as they snapped off their salutes, she went striding past them into the darkening woods.
