SIENNA

As we set out for the evening hayrack ride, my patience is wearing thin. Kevin and Alexis are cuddled up together on the tractor, wrapped in an oversized flannel blanket from a brand Alexis keeps mentioning in all the videos she’s shooting for her “peeps.”

We’re only twenty minutes into the two-hour ride that will take us through all three properties, and I’m trying my best to remember the breathing techniques I learned during a Mindful Meditation seminar I took one semester on a lark.

It’s been like this all weekend.

You’d think with three whole properties for them to visit, I could maybe get a break from their public love session. Thank goodness for Weston, is all I can see. Not only has he played the part of doting boyfriend to perfection, but he’s also turned out to be a good buddy.

He’s also become a frequent guest star in my dreams. Ones that have made me blush when I see him for the first time every morning.

We go over a bump in the road, Alexis squeals and grips onto Kevin.

“OMG, peeps.” She giggles into her phone screen. “This place is, like, so rustic. Can you even?”

Gritting my teeth, I lean over to Weston, who is seated next to me, steering the open-top truck. “Am I being overly sensitive, or is Alexis obnoxious?”

He chuckles and slides an arm over my shoulders. “I’d like to toss the pair of them over the side. But it probably wouldn’t help our Yelp rating.”

I snort and cover my mouth in horror. Eyes wide, I pray that Weston didn’t hear me. But based on the loud guffaw he just made, that’s a prayer that will go unanswered.

Sitting back in my seat, I try my best to ignore our only passengers. Instead, I study Weston. He really has been the best all week. He’s had my back at every turn. And watching him give Kevin a sound butt-kicking at the pie-eating contest will go down as one of the greatest moments in my memory.

“I really appreciate your doing this,” I say, low enough that our passengers won’t hear.

“Hey, I’m getting free labor.”

“Yeah, but that’s fleeting.” I hesitate a moment before placing my hand on his arm. “What you’re doing is helping me save face. And that will last a lifetime.”

“It’s been a pleasure.”

And the way he says it, I almost believe it. Just like I almost believe he enjoyed the kiss we shared yesterday at the pie-eating contest as much as I did. No, I’m not going to sell myself short there. I could tell he enjoyed that kiss as much as I did. Heck, in the end, he was the one kissing the daylights out of me.

I fan myself with my hand because it suddenly feels hot in this Autumn air.

“Are you okay?” Weston asks, slowing the engine. “Because I have some water in the cooler if you want.”

Before I can reply, Alexis screams. Weston slams on the brakes and we turn to find her having a complete and total meltdown that would put a toddler to shame.
