The spot welder tips are commonly fixed into the welding machine’s arms with a tapered steel pin. This is pressed into a hole in the arm to lock the tip in place. The tip is released by loosening the pin; use a small hammer to tap the pin out to reposition the tip.

The tips are usually sharpened to a cylindrical tapered point with a shallow dome on the end. They can be sharpened to an offset to allow access into the corner of a flanged joint, where the flange being welded is narrow.

The weld tips must be aligned vertically, directly opposing each other. The welder arms are adjustable, allowing them to be moved in and out from the machine’s body and rotated to position them accordingly.
