The following list of annual trade shows by industry could be your ticket to that first job. Click on the show nearest to your location or the show focusing on an area of interest, like photography, housing, travel, or educational technology and publishing. These organizations hold annual conferences in different locations each year.
The Publishing and Education Industries
American Booksellers Association (ABA), www.bookweb.com. The ABA holds an annual conference and several regional conferences where you can see many companies in the print and digital publishing industry. The 2014 and 2015 annual conventions will be held at the Javits Center in New York City.
American Association of School Administrators (AASA), www.aasa.org. Hundreds of companies exhibit here to display their products to school superintendents and other high-level school administrators. The companies attending this convention are publishers and producers of instructional materials, school supply companies, bus companies, insurance companies, security companies, and more.
Association of Educational Publishers (AEP), www.aepweb.org. This organization sponsors an annual conference in June each year in Washington, DC. Attendees include high-level educational technology and publishing company executives, all of whom are hiring authorities. In 2013, this organization merged with the Association of American Publishers (AAP).
American Library Association (ALA), www.ala.org. This conference is devoted to books and digital products related to public and school libraries and online education. It’s a fascinating show with hundreds of exhibitors from the education, publishing, and online learning industries. Once you are on this website, click on “Education and Careers.” You will not be sorry because you may find your first job right here.
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), www.ascd.org. Members of ASCD are involved with curriculum at K–12 schools. Thousands of these administrators, called curriculum coordinators or assistant superintendents for curriculum, attend this show. The conference is held in a different location each year.
American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), www.astd.org. This nonprofit organization is devoted to training and professional development for educators and government workers. It holds an annual plenary conference in a major city plus four regional conferences. The 2013 annual conference was held in Dallas, May 19-22, and attracted approximately 9,000 attendees from eighty different countries. More than 300 companies exhibited their products and services. The fee for entrance to view the exhibits? Free! Track the annual and regional conferences because this is where you will meet many employers in the flesh, each one being the source for a possible first job. Think of it. Three hundred potential employers gathered under one roof. Does job hunting get any easier than that?
BookExpo America (BEA), www.bookexpoamerica.com. Book-Expo America is the largest trade show in America for the book publishing industry. BEA held its 2013 annual convention at the Javits Center in New York City. More than 1,200 companies hosted exhibits on the conference center floor, all staffed by full-time employees. Some held editorial positions, some were marketing managers, some came from sales, others from finance, and still others from information technology. Where in the world could you find so many potential employers under one roof?
