Chapter Twelve
This morning is like waking up from a dream. I wake up and stretch my limbs and open my eyes and stare up at my ceiling. The boy band posters and their cheerful smiles smile down at me like theyâre telling me, âGood morning Britt. Have a lovely time last night?â
I giggle to myself and roll out of bed. After Travis carried me back to his truck in my haze of sleep he drove me home and kissed me good night. I practically wondered, dreamy-eyed, up to my room and fell right into bed. The date from Cloud-Nine. Thatâs what Iâd call it. Granted, I wouldnât brag to Annabelle or anyone that we went to Wendyâs for food. I chuckle to myself at the thought. I whip around my room getting dressed and grab my backpack and as soon as I hear the familiar sound of Annabelle honking the horn of Old Yellow I race for the door. Dad is cooking something delicious in the kitchen and I swing by the island counter. âWhatâs this?â I ask.
âOh hello. Sleepy Head. Itâs scrapple. By the way why didnât you stop by the living room when you got home? Oh thatâs right, because it was late and I was already in bed!â He pulls the plate of scrapple away from my reach.
âDad come on. Iâm sorry Iâyou know time getâs away from you when youâre having a good time.â
âA good time?â He eyes me with a salacious expression.
âDad. Stop. It was innocent fun.â
He slides the plate back over to me and I take off with as much scrapple as I can carry. âDonât eat allâhey!â
I run out the door and jump into the car.
âWhatâs that on your face?â Annabelle asks as soon as I get in.
I pat my cheek and my chin and ask, âWhat? Scrapple grease? I dunno. Dad refused to let me out without a little lecture this morning.â
âNo.â She moves a finger over her mouth in an upward arc. âThat smile.â
âOh. Full belly?â
âSince when has that ever caused a smile on a school morning?â she eyes me suspiciously.
My heart beats fast. âI donât know.â I shrug. âMust be this scrapple. Itâs fucking delicious. Try some.â I shove some in her face but she pushes it away, grimacing.
âDo you even know whatâs in that?â
I shrug. âWho cares itâs delish.â
âGross. You donât want to know.â Annabelle starts the car, it rumbles and shudders before it lurches forward and begins to smooth out on the stretch toward Oceanside High.
âSo you ready for tonight?â I ask, trying my best not to seem like Iâm changing the subject.
âWhatâs tonight?â She asks with a clueless expression as she stares straight ahead.
âYouâre kidding right?â
Shaking her head she turns the steering wheel quickly, âJeez did you see that?â
âWhat?â
âThat freak in the black mustang almost ran me over in my own lane.â
I look back through the rear view and sure enough an old model mustang is zooming, weaving over into passing traffic just to swerve back into its own lane.
