Chapter Fifteen

Matt’s legs hurt. That was becoming a recurring theme of his new life, his muscles aching from constant use. He wasn’t upset by it; he was no stranger to exercise and the harsh realities of life in Riverbend had to be better than any workout in his life. The downside was that a harsh lifestyle didn’t have the same rest days a routine at the gym did and it was starting to get at Matt. He was already cursing himself for insisting he went on the journey to the mountain. He just had to remind himself that this was all just temporary. Riverbend had gone from a single log hut to a bronze age settlement in a short period so it was only a matter of time before Matt could lounge around in a castle surrounded by jewels. That was the hope anyway, assuming he didn’t freeze to death on the mountain.

The land beyond the top of the valley was mostly unexplored, getting the land directly around Riverbend fully understood had been considered more important. The valley levelled off at the top into open fields, green stretching out towards the base of the mountain, interrupted only by small clusters of trees not large enough to qualify as forest but big enough to hide potential threats. The smell of burning troll flesh still lingered in Matt’s nostrils and he knew from experience they weren’t the only beasts roaming the island. He wondered if the bear had found a way out of the cave or if his plan had worked.

He wished that the strange system that underpinned this world worked more like he was used to from video games. At least then he would have gotten an experience point notification if the bear had died. The thought reminded Matt he needed to do something, and he reached into his pocket and pulled out a thin sliver of wood. He had scratched the word banana onto it with charcoal. The exact word didn’t matter, it wasn’t the point, it was simply something for Matt to cast his spell on.

He focused his mind and the word changed, the charcoal swirling about and reforming. The word now read apricot, Matt keeping the fruit theme.

Law Magic experience gained – 25 points

The experience reward hadn’t decreased yet, which was good, Matt needed all the points he could get. Law magic was tied to his class and each rank had brought a new spell so far. Levelling it up would be important. Matt had a feeling in the pit of his stomach that magical power was going to be vital for Riverbend’s survival. He just had to hope that his spells weren’t limited to doing basic admin.

Reality before him rippled as a scroll took form. It was rolled up, but Matt knew what was written on it. Apricot.

Law Magic experience gained – 10 points

“Using your spells?” Elvira said. She had stuck close to Matt as he had walked, Frida and Nijal ranging ahead and behind of them quite some distance.
