Chapter Fifteen

Scout

“That was perfect! That was so good! I couldn’t have asked for a better pair of actors! Or should I say, you guys couldn’t have asked for better actors. You guys saved your own asses and then some!”

“Shall we celebrate, Palir? What are you thinkin’, Scout?”

“Hold your horses,” Palir says, “I’ve got some work to do, thanks to the two of you. But, if I don’t end up killing myself or dying from being overworked, sure, let’s celebrate.”

I finally chime in, asking him how we’re supposed to get home from the studio.

“You’re adults, you’ll figure something out. Uber, Lyft, the world is right at your fingertips, kid,” Palir says before getting into his car. He rolls his window down and bids us a quick farewell in a very in-character manner, before speeding off.

There’s a moment of relief between Bryan and I as we watch Palir drive away. We don’t say anything to each other for a while. We need this time to unwind. Our veins are still pumping with adrenaline after that interview from hell. I can hear Bryan’s breathing. He can probably hear mine, if he’s listening for it.

I don’t mind the silence, but there is something I want to ask him. During the interview, Bryan really undersold his volunteer work, and instead focused on the importance of the organization. It was great of him to help me with Children for the Future, but I don’t understand why he didn’t try to better his image during the interview. That was the whole point of it.

“Bryan,” I mumble, “can I ask you something?”

Asking him that shook him out of whatever trance he was in. He smiles at me as he pulls out his phone.

“Say no more, I’ll get us a Lyft back um… well, to your place, and then to mine.”

“That’s — Thank you, Bryan.”

We continue to stand on the sidewalk in silence, waiting for our ride. When it finally arrives and we’re buckled in, I tap Bryan’s arm.

“Bryan, why did you change your answer?”

“Hm?”

“When Lori asked you what it was that kept you going back to Children for The Future. You started out saying that you kept going back for the kids, but then you stopped. Why?”

“I… It didn’t feel right to act like I’m such a good person. I’m not. The whole reason I started volunteering is to improve my public image and…”

“I know.”

“You know,” he asks incredulously.

“Of course, I know. There’s isn’t a single celebrity who cares about altruism. Well, that’s not entirely true but the ones that do exist out there, usually start a foundation of their own. Frankly, I was just happy to get the extra pair of hands. Children of The Future is short on volunteers, especially after — sorry for bringing it up again, but — the fundraising event.”

“Right. Regardless, I care about those kids. And I am going to keep showing up for them. Not everything I said in there was bull. I do think Children of The Future is an important organization that needs more backing,” he tells me.
