Office Politics and Social Skills

Many of you are probably still resistant to the idea of pursuing office politics. You’re sure, like Chandra, that you can get by on good work alone.

Beware. Many studies by social psychologists show that people who find and keep the best jobs also have the best social skills. Study after study has shown that social skills matter more than technical skills or good work alone. Peruse Daniel Goleman’s book, Social Intelligence, if you’re not familiar with this literature.

Politics exist in every organization—look at your own family dynamics. In most families, there are things that everyone knows not to tell Grandma or Aunt Mabel. Similarly, there are some things you have to make sure you tell your mom because she’ll freak if she hears them first from your sister.

Workplaces operate the same way. In order to be linked-in, you have to be in the know. In order to be in the know you have to have good social skills and use them—even when you don’t want to.

Still unconvinced? Look at this list of traits that recruiters look for in business school candidates:

• Communication and interpersonal skills

• Original and visionary thinking

• Leadership potential

• Ability to work well within a team

• Analytical and problem-solving skills

While you have to be smart and good at what you do, brushing up on your social skills isn’t optional—especially in today’s team-oriented environment.
