CHAPTER 11
RUNNERâS HIGH
Darius
âTHATâS TIME,â MS. PATTEN SAYS. WITH A JOLT OF ADRENALINE, I punctuate my last sentence. âPencils down, please, and blue books in the basket. Pencils down, Levi. Youâve had forty minutes. On the AP exam, you wonât get more for an essay question.â
I close my blue book and stand up so I can toss it into the basket at the front of the room with the others. History is DONE. Only four more classes stand between me and winter break. I crammed for today practically all of last night, so during my one hour of sleep I dreamed that Confederate soldiers were made to write essays about Mary Shelley. It wasnât the worst idea.
When the bell rings, I trudge off to Honors American Literature and what should be my last timed essay of the day. I manage to get my reflections down in another blue book before the time goes there, tooâjust barely, but I make it. Now only Spanish III, AP Calculus, and AP Biology. Then two glorious weeks of sleep.
I did better than I expected on the PSAT, but Iâve slipped off the top of the class leader board. Thereâs just too much going on. The list taunts me after I hand over my AP Calculus examâearly, of courseâat the front of Mr. Davisâs room. I should get things back on track during spring trimester, when my Spanish class is replaced with Honors Chemistry. I try not to obsess about it and instead watch the slush fall outside the classroom window. Everyoneâs been praying for it to turn to snow all day.
Iâm barely conscious when the last bell rings in AP Biology. âHave a great holiday break!â Mr. Mendoza tells us as he circles the room, collecting exams.
Marina walks over to my lab bench, shaking her head. âThat was terrible!â
âReally?â I ask. âI didnât think it was bad.â
âOf course you didnât. You always ace science.â
âBet you did better than me on the Calculus exam,â I tell her. âAnd all the essays. Iâm sure of that.â
She smiles. I shoulder my bag, and we walk toward the parking lot together with the rest of the herd. The halls are full of kids looking very happy. The AP crew looks like weâre minutes away from passing out. Although Collin somehow still finds it in him to stare longingly at Marina when he thinks no oneâs looking.
âWhat are you doing tonight?â Marina asks me.
âI have big plans to do absolutely nothing.â I grin. âWhat about you?â
âFamily dinner. Everyoneâs coming over, meaning my aunt and uncle are coming over to check on Haruto.â
I take off my glasses so I can rub my face. âDid he get that job?â
âYup, I hope heâs okay there. At least heâs officially living with us now that heâs working and going to rehab. I still feel bad for him. Heâs not even allowed to borrow a car.â
âOh, right.â I forgot about the DUI thing. âDoes he need a bike? He can borrow one of mine.â I donât think the Takahashis are that into cycling.
