Chapter Twenty-Five

Captain Sokolov, the gentle bear on the tricycle, has been so very kind these last three weeks. He slips into the kitchen when he has time and dandles Mia upon his knee. He sings her Russian nursery rhymes, tells her Russian fairy tales about a witch called Baba Yaga and a beautiful girl called Vasilisa, and kisses her golden curls when she uses Russian words. He brings her gifts – a doll, a tiny wooden train, a little china teapot. I know they are stolen from German homes after the families have fled. Stolen toys that once belonged to other German children like Mia. But Mia is happy, and I am glad that she has something to play with.

‘Mia is a princess!’ says Captain Sokolov every time he hands her back to Viktor or me. He says it in Russian but I am learning more and more of this strange language every day.

But today, Captain Sokolov sits Mia on the floor and says something else. I think I understand the Russian words, but when he’s gone, I check with Viktor.

‘Did he say that his wife would like a little girl like Mia?’

Viktor sighs. ‘Yes.’ He wipes his hand across his forehead, leaving a streak of flour. ‘Although he might have said “love” not “like” . . . and perhaps it was “will” not “would”.’

I frown as I try to piece the new words together.

And then my neck prickles.
