“It’s an enchanted item,” he said. “Are you trying to tell us that you used this to stay on Earth for a hundred years? But how? The Crucible hadn’t come yet, and you weren’t a Challenger at that time. How did you get an enchanted item, much less be able to use it if you didn’t have any cosmic energy?”

“That’s a long story…” Srralnthirazz laughed nervously. “Are you sure you want me to tell it right now? Here? In the middle of this godforsaken place?”

“Some enchanted items make their way beyond the worlds taken by the Crucible and out into the cosmos, lad,” Torgar said, hitching his hammer back to his belt and running a gauntleted hand through his beard. “And not all enchanted items need their user to be a Challenger. This orb has a small switch on the top. See that? I bet it’s a cycler of some sort that conserves and reuses the cosmic energy the orb contains. My mentor had a tool like that too, back in the day. He used it to make the finest guns you’ll ever see.”

Bain took a closer look at the rubber ball Srralnthirazz was holding up, and he saw that it did have a small knob on its surface. A quick scan with Flowsight told him that pressing the switch would almost certainly cause the cosmic energy within the Orb of Obfuscation to flow out and engulf whoever was holding it. An intricate pattern within its depths was likely responsible for pulling back the cosmic energy and re-priming it for subsequent use.

“Use it, and put on a disguise you’d wear on Earth, back in the day,” Bain told Srralnthirazz as he pointed to the rubber ball. “I can see cosmic energy, so I’ll be able to figure out how that thing works.”

“Sure thing.” The Weaver depressed the knob. Sure enough, cosmic energy emerged in a rose-colored cloud that fell over his body. When the cloud dispersed, a tall, blonde, and unrealistically proportioned woman was standing where Srralnthirazz had been. When she spoke, the spider’s voice emerged from between her lips. “There. Happy?”

“Not very,” Bain said, stifling a sigh and averting his gaze. “But I think that’s enough to give you plausible deniability. I can still tell it’s you by the flow of cosmic energy in your body, so if you do start wearing someone’s skin at the Fortieth Bastion…”

“I’ll tear off your legs one by one and strangle you with your innards,” Ikaru promised. “And after that, I’ll let my sister have her turn. ”

“Look, man.” Srralnthirazz pressed the knob on the Orb of Obfuscation again and went back to his arachnid appearance. “I lived on Earth for a hundred years, and I never killed a single human. Never. My choice of food? Fried chicken. Burgers. Pizza. Beer.

I guess that all did exist a hundred years ago.
